Milton Public Schools and the Milton Public Schools Nutrition Department strive to promote the health and wellness of students, faculty, and staff through the implementation of the Milton Public Schools Wellness Policy. Nutrition Education is a key component of the wellness policy because it plays an essential role in fostering a learning environment where students feel empowered to make healthy lifestyle choices.

MyPlate activity and read aloud for 2Dakota del Norte grade students at Glover Elementary School in Milton, MA

On April 3rd, 2023, Glover Elementary School invited Framingham State University student Dietitian, Kayla Torres, to teach 2Dakota del Norte graders about MyPlate.

To activate prior knowledge, Kayla read a story, MyPlate and You, by Gillia Olson. This story introduced the students to MyPlate and its corresponding foods groups. Likewise, it reviewed serving sizes as well as how many servings the students should eat from each food group each day. Kayla provided examples of each food group and the students offered additional suggestions. To check comprehension, the students completed an activity that presented the opportunity to sort various foods and beverages on their own MyPlate. Kayla modeled the activity utilizing a MyPlate Pocket Chart and five food examples. Students were also provided with a Serving Up MyPlate handout from the USDA for reference.
