Spencer East Brookfield Public Schools is committed to providing their students with access to healthy eating and physical activity education in a safe and encouraging environment. The district’s Wellness Policy goal is to enhance student’s learning and contribute to their healthy growth and development while cultivating life-long healthy eating behaviors. To achieve this goal and ensure standards are met, qualified educators from UMASS Extension Nutrition Program provide the students with engaging lesson plans that focus on developing a healthy relationship with food and physical activity.

Samantha Runshaw teaching at Wire Village Elementary School.

On April 10, 2022, Framingham State University graduate student in the Coordinated Program in Dietetics and UMASS Extension intern, Samantha Runshaw, taught second grade students at Wire Village Elementary School about dairy foods and the health benefits associated with eating them. Students learned about the variety of animals that can provide us with milk as well as dairy free alternatives. They also learned that dairy provides them with the nutrient, calcium and this is required to keep their bones strong. In addition to calcium, students learned exercise is also very important to make their bones strong and learned this by performing a variety of exercises as a group. By the end of the presentation students were able to identify different dairy products and pick 3 items to include on a daily basis to meet their calcium needs.
